SUMMARY:Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry
DESCRIPTION:On April 12\, 2012\, the Mayor will declare the City of Denton's first ever "Day of Concern for the Hungry\," and food will be collected to distribute to area food pantries. About 15 percent of the county's population faces hunger and food insecurity\, and one in four Texas children struggle with hunger and poor nutrition. Though little community awareness focuses on this topic so close to home\, this event seeks to change that.\n\n	Throughout the Mayor's Day of Concern\, food donations will be collected at City Hall\, as well as at area grocery stores and supermarkets. Volunteers will be on hand distributing "grocery lists" of supplies most needed at Denton shelters/food pantries and collecting groceries.\n\n	All food collected during the Mayor's Day of Concern will go directly to Denton-area nonprofit organizations directly serving those who need food most. These organizations include Our Daily Bread\, Vision Ministries\, the Denton Community Food Center\, and the Salvation Army. The Mayor's Day of Concern also seeks to highlight these organizations within the community that are serving those in need and have opportunities to volunteer and donate year round.\n\n	Volunteers are needed to distribute shopping lists and collect food.
